Can you become addicted to weight loss?

My friend is 5′11” and weighs 110 pounds. She looks really abnormal, almost to the point of looking anorexic. She talks about her weight all the time, not bragging or complaining, just talking and that worries me that it is on her mind a lot. She used to be at a healthy weight about 4 months ago, and now she is far too skinny. And im around her enough to know that she isn’t anorexic or bulimic, she just eats really “healthy” foods.
Breakfast for her is a bowl of unsweetened oatmeal, lunch is a baggy of celery sticks and dinner is a straight spinach salad with vinaigrette dressing and that’s all she eats, everyday. As well, she cant fall asleep at night without working out for at least a half hour. She claims shes trying to gain weight, but i watch her eat and know shes doing nothing different. And she is still obviously losing weight. I feel like i need to help her but i don’t know what to do, because whenever i bring it up, she gets very defensive and says shes just being healthy. So can you be addicted to weight loss, and if so, what should i do?

Becoming addicted to weight loss is basically what Anorexia is… if you have a mental disorder that basically tells you that you need to stay ridiculously skinny and can’t ever gain a pound… or you need to continue to lose weight.

I am not a professional, but it sounds like your friend is well on the way to an eating disorder, which in effect could be seen as being “addicted to loosing weight”. she needs to talk to a professional/ medical person, as her behaviors are very similar to those with anorexia…but getting her to see this is a delicate issue as you don’t want to alienate her… If she is under 21, at some point, it might be appropriate to talk to her parents or some other adult who can help…

She obviously needs help. Her diet is not in the slightest bit healthy. If she wants to eat healthily and that diet is the best she can come up with she needs to see a nutrionist. There is no protein in her diet – in fact it is not worth discussing. It is deficient in almost everything. I am not sure why you are convinced she isn’t anorexic but she does have a problem.

Well, actually you can. People start to feel that they are doing the best for themselves, so they continue. They want to feel better and their way of doing this sort of thing is to keep doing it. I once had a friend who dieted constintently on everything she could find. Over time, she got so stressed about her weight that she ended up fatter than from the start. My advice, be who you are, no matter what and be the best you can. Period.

    Hello

First, I understand where you’re coming from.
Here’s what I found out after lots of research and trial and error, the hard way.

The reality is that there are no shortcuts or easy ways to get in good shape. Sorry, but someone needed to tell you this.
As long as you get conscious about what you are doing, you will see the results.

Below you will find the four principles that you need to keep in mind in your weight-loss journey.

    1.Forget About Diets

People that go from diet to diet never reach a stable weight, let alone a good shape. The reason is quite simple: diets are, by their very nature, temporary. You can’t expect to eat properly for two or three weeks and fix your weight problems for the rest of the year.

    2.Proper Nutrition

If you want to keep your weight and fat percentage under control, you will need to learn the basics of nutrition. Once you learn them, you will be able to eat healthy throughout the year.

    3.Physical Exercise

Eating healthy and having a caloric deficit will only take you half the way. The other key factor is physical exercise.

    4.Discipline and Perseverance

You can start eating healthy and exercising properly, but unless you stick doing it regularly, the results won’t appear (if they do, they won’t last).

Discipline and perseverance are key here.
